Secunda at a glance
In 1976 construction of R2,3 billion Sasol 2 commences and a new town named Secunda is born.
The name of our town means "Second", which originated from the Latin language, and was so-called
due to the fact that it was the second extraction refinery making oil from coal. This opening was a
result of the oil crisis in the years 1973 to 1974. Like the world's first such plant at Sasolburg, the
Secunda plants produce commercial quantities of oil. Built by Sasol Ltd. (called the South African
Coal, Oil, and Gas Corporation Ltd. before 1979), the second plant achieved full production in 1982.
The plants also produce a great variety of chemicals as well as gasoline; ancillary industries produce
fertilizers, plastics, man-made fibres, and detergents.
Secunda is located about 180km from Johannesburg with easy access to the main roads via the
newly renovated N17 highway. We are also situated approximately 260km from Nelspruit and the very
popular Kruger National Park. This makes Secunda a perfect centre for the family who loves travelling
to these destinations
Today Secunda is a flourishing town that offers great schools and lots of attractions to keep the
children as well as parents entertained. Secunda has offers a established casino with a beautiful golf
course, Lake Umuzi has overnight accommodation, a caravan park and a stunning indoor pool with a
super tube. Do the kids need to get rid of some energy? Then look no further - take them to Ijump

Secunda currently has a variety of schools with dual medium language options. They are situated in
